Button, button, who's got the button?

Sew, Mama, Sew! has been featuring posts pertaining to all things sewing machine related. I thought I'd get in on the excitement and post a simple tutorial on making a buttonhole. This tute features the Janome sewing machine. This is my mom's machine, but sometimes I like to spend quality time with a great sewing machine. :)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the tute and feel confident to go out and try it for yourself. Most machines work in a fairly similar manner, so give it a whirl!

Mouse over "Notes" in the frame below to view more detailed information.

Any questions?

Uh oh. My Janome isn't that fancy. I guess I'll go back to sms and check out the 'bar tack' method. drat!

You might check out some of the other brand tutes on SMS... I have a brother and it works very much like the Janome (also, it's not one of the models addressed in the Brother tute, but it really works just the same way).

Thanks for the tip. I'll check my machine's options when I get home. I'm sure one of the tutorials will help me. [I've only been at this since November and it's sort of a self-guided tour :)]

I have a Kenmore made by Janome and your tutorial followed along for my machine as well. I don't have quite as fancy a machine as yours so my menu choice was different than yours.

I have a non computerized Janome and thought I'd add these notes for using the button hole attachment on mine.

When setting your dial to "buttton hole" you'll need to spin the dial at least two turns - generally I go past button hole one stitch and back again. The dial will also need to be reset for EACH buttonhole you wish to sew! (this is stated nowhere in the manual)

When starting up gently ease down on your pedal - too fast (at least on my machine) and it won't make a buttonhole...

Thank you for the tutorial! I have a 2 week old janome and had been trying to figure out the buttonhole bit. Mine is a non computerized like rcd and resetting the dial and past one sticht then back mad ethe difference to getting it to work! thanks to you all!

This tutorial is great - and helped me get halfway through a buttonhole on my basic (non computerized) Janome. It has the exact same foot and it says I have a 1 step buttonhole.

My machine will do the first side of the buttonhole, but won't do the end tack and reverse to come forward again. The manual doesn't say i have to do anything different than what you've detailed here.

What am I doing wrong?

@My Blog - I don't know if you read the previous comments or not, but two other Janome users (of non-computerized models) mentioned that they turn the dial twice and actually go past the buttonhole option before turning the dial back to select a buttonhole. This seems to make a difference for them.

Have you tried this?

Good luck!

Thank you SO Much! This is one of those skills that you need someone to explain to you...the visuals really helped. I could not, for the life of me, visualize the button hole lever and its purpose until I found your tutorial!

Thankyou, extrememly helpful, especially the bit about changing the stitch setting each time to "reset" the buttonhole...couldn't work that one out on my own!
